JD Mah-
What an amazing day for our School District.
Some 400 to 500 students from Nakusp Elementary & Secondary, Lucerne, Burton and Edgewood gathered in Nakusp today for a celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day.
The students first met at NES a little before ten this morning for a smudging ceremony by Elder Michael Garvey to begin the proceedings.
In a well organized program, under sunny skies, students then broke into Secondary & Elementary divisions and into smaller groups to circle through various stations to learn of indigenous culture, art and sports with student and adult leaders at each stop.
Among the stations :
Métis Florals/Painting
Métis Red River Carts
Beading
Cree Corralling the Buffalo
Games (Leg Wrestling to Lacrosse)
Storytelling
Haudenosaunee Peace Tree
Local History
Patrick Alexandre Concert
In the noon hour, the older students lined up for lunch outside Nakusp Elementary (Elementary students were served in classrooms).
Before the out-of-town students boarded their buses at two, they had a further opportunity to check out the various information stations and for elementary students to participate in a rockin’ dancin’ concert by Patrick Alexandre in a jam-packed NSS gymnasium.
And, by the end of the day we noticed NSS Principal Mike Hibberson trying out the "Buffalo Spear" while School Superintendent was helping flip burgers! Super job by all.
